The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1979, Rabat (Morocco), as a body under the auspices of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and Organization of African Unity (OAU). Headquarters located in Nairobi (Kenya). As of 2004 'closed down'.

Aims

Assist Member States in acquiring and developing adequate technical manpower capability for the transformation of African economies and exploitation of the region's natural resources for the benefit and prosperity of the African people; make African states self-reliant in technical manpower.

Activities

Promotion, organization or co-sponsorship of higher technical training courses, workshops, seminars or symposia designed to re-orient the attitudes and to enhance the skills, knowledge and performance capability of technical personnel in the services of public, parastatal and private institutions and enterprises within the Member States of the Institute. Provision of advanced and refresher training courses for higher level technical teachers and instructors in both pedagogy and subject-matter and in the management and organization of technical training institutions Provision of special and ad hoc training courses upon the request of a Member State in order to meet the specific need of that Member State. Undertaking, co-sponsoring or facilitation of the conduct of studies on technical and technological education and training and related research problems connected with the socio-economic and technological development of the Member States. Services as the regional centre for training, research and consultancy in specialized disciplines of technical and technological education and manpower training for public, parastatal and private sectors of the economies of Member States. Provides documentation and information services and acts as a reference centre in the field of technical education and research. Tests, evaluates, develops and disseminates innovative techniques in the teaching, adaptation, development and application of technology.

The Institute is organized into multi-disciplinary Centres of activity, some of which include teaching areas, research and design workshops, marketing arrangements: Centre for Agricultural Engineering and Food Technology; Centre for Technical Teachers Training; Centre for Electro-Mechanical Engineering; Centre for Environmental and Infrastructural Studies; Centre for Industrial Production; Centre for Business and Social Studies; Centre for Physical Science and Medical Technology; Centre for Chemical and Non-Metalliferous Technology; Centre for Natural Energy Resources and Mineral Exploitation; Centre for Electronics and Communications Technology.
