Why Tartu?

By Riine Tiigi, Marketing Manager, Estonian Convention Bureau
Did you know that…?

  • Tartu, the second-largest city in Estonia, is also the oldest in the Baltic States, with written records dating back to 1030. Often referred to as Estonia’s intellectual capital, Tartu has played a key role in the nation’s cultural and national awakening — it’s where the first national theatre, newspaper, and song festival began. Fittingly, the city’s slogan is ‘The City of Good Thoughts’.
  • The University of Tartu, founded in 1632, is ranked among the top 350 universities in the world. It is a driving force in the city’s research and innovation scene and offers rich opportunities for academic and scientific collaboration.
  • Tartu held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2024, showcasing its vibrant arts scene, cultural heritage, and creative energy on a European stage. The year also marked a record-breaking moment for international conferences in the city, with over 60 conferences taking place.
  • With a population of about 100,000, one in five Tartu residents is a student, giving the city a dynamic and youthful vibe. Add to that over 200 eateries — from cosy cafés to international restaurants — and it’s easy to find the perfect spot to relax, connect, and recharge.

Help for international associations?

At the Estonian Convention Bureau, we're here to make the planning process as smooth as possible. We help international associations identify the most suitable venues and hotels, suggest evening event locations, and offer creative ideas for social and networking programmes. We also connect organisers with trusted local partners — whether they need support from AV providers, PCOs or DMCs — or wish to collaborate with academic experts from Tartu’s renowned university community.

Where to meet?

Tartu offers a variety of unique and inspiring venues for meetings and conferences. A particular strength lies in its strong academic setting — many international scientific and academic conferences are held within the campuses of the University of Tartu and the Estonian University of Life Sciences, both internationally recognised research institutions. The historic Assembly Hall of the University of Tartu, located in its iconic main building, is a highlight in itself, an architectural gem of classicism with seating for up to 470 attendees.

For larger gatherings, the Estonian National Museum is an impressive, modern venue with a capacity of up to 1,000 participants. Another popular option is the V Spa Hotel Conference Centre, which can accommodate events for up to 600 people in a contemporary setting.

Tartu also offers memorable off-site options for receptions or informal sessions, such as the Lodjakoda Barge Complex or the creatively repurposed former Comb Factory.

Where to stay?

Tartu offers a variety of accommodation options, with around 2,500 hotel beds available across the city. While the hotels are generally small — reflecting the cosy scale of the city — they are located close to one another, making it easy to combine different properties for larger groups. Tartu features several comfortable 3-star, 4-star, and 4-star superior hotels. For those seeking top comfort, Hotel Lydia (4-star superior, 70 rooms) blends boutique charm with modern amenities. V Spa & Conference Hotel is another favourite, offering a full 4-star experience with a spa, conference centre, and 86 stylish rooms. The Dorpat Hotel, a 3-star superior property, stands out with its 197 rooms and attractive riverside location.

How to reach Tartu?

Tartu connects to the world primarily through Tallinn International Airport. The most convenient way to reach Tartu from Tallinn is by Lux Express coach, with departures every 30 minutes from both Tallinn Airport and the Tallinn Coach Station. The journey takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes. Tartu also has a small regional airport, offering two daily flights between Tartu and Helsinki, the capital of Finland, operated by Finnair.

Somewhere special: personal recommendations/insider tips?

  • In summer, hop aboard a historic barge for a relaxed cruise along the scenic Emajõgi River — one of Tartu’s most beloved landmarks. These replicas of old trade vessels offer a unique way to explore the city and the surrounding southern Estonian landscape.
  • All year round, A. Le Coq Beer World offers a refreshing dive into brewing history. Step inside the Beer Museum to see, hear, and taste the story of beer — from ancient Egypt to today.
