History
20 Dec 1971, New York NY (USA), when resolution 2872 (XXVI) of the General Assembly of the A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) authorized implementation of short and intermediate term measures as soon as funds were available, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 2679 (XXV) of 9 Dec 1970, following a request of the E-XE3376 - United Nations Security Council (UNSC) contained in resolution 283 (1970) of 29 Jul 1970. Mandate completed 1994.
Aims
Assist and prepare the Namibian people for self-determination and independence; provide them with comprehensive assistance.

Overall administration and management of the Fund was the responsibility of the H-XE1030 - United Nations Council for Namibia through its Committee on the United Nations Fund for Namibia. Following independence of Namibia, 21 Mar 1990 and decision of the General Assembly, 11 Sep 1990, the Council was dissolved and the Fund continues under custody of the Secretary-General. A 'United Nations Trust Committee' has been established by the General Assembly to serve as Trustee of the Fund.
