The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1 Feb 1993, Brussels (Belgium), by resolution 93/701/EC (2), as an independent advisory body to E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC), one of 3 informal consultation bodies set up under the 5th Action Programme on the Environment. Scope enlarged, 5 Jun 1997, Brussels, to include new members from the European Economic Area (EEA) and from associated countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Ceased to exist, Jul 2001.

Aims

Bring together representatives from the sectors of production, the business world, regional and local authorities, professional associations, unions and environmental and consumer organizations to advise the European Commission by means of recommendations and opinions linked to any policy decision vital to the environment and sustainable development in Europe. Current emphasis: monitoring European climate change strategy, particularly the North-South dimension and implementation of Kyoto agreements; benchmarking and monitoring the process of integration of sustainability concerns in all EU policy areas.

Structure

Forum comprises 32 members with particular competence in the field of the environment and sustainable development, seats being allocated as follows: 7-12 business figures; 3-5 representatives from regional and local authorities; 4-7 representatives from environmental protection and consumer organizations; 1-3 trade union representatives; 7-10 eminent personalities. They include Chairman and 2 Vice-Chairmen and are appointed by the European Commission for 4-year terms in their personal capacity on the basis of suggestions from European interest groups. Secretariat, Bureau and working parties provided by the Commission. Working groups. Ad hoc groups.
