History

Founded May 1961, Geneva (Switzerland), following meeting of computer manufacturers in Europe, 27 Apr 1960. By-Laws, Rules and Code of Conduct in Patent Matters adopted 29 Mar 1963, 2 June 1966, 15 Dec 1988, 28 June 2001. Code of Conduct in Patent Matters changed, 4 Dec 2009. Original title: European Computer Manufacturers Association -- Association européenne de constructeurs d'ordinateurs -- Asociación Europea de Fabricantes de Computadoras -- Europäische Vereinigung der Computer Hersteller. Name changed, 1994, to Ecma International - International Europe-based Industry Association for Standardizing Information and Communication Systems. Currently only known under its acronym. Registered in accordance with Swiss Civil Code.

Aims

Study and develop standards and technical reports in cooperation with appropriate national, European and international organizations to facilitate use of information processing, consumer electronics and telecommunication systems; encourage correct use of standards by influencing the environment in which they are applied; promulgate various standards applicable to functional design and use of information processing and telecommunication systems.
