Encourage tolerance and understanding between communities and individuals of different religious traditions; promote inter-religious dialogue and intercultural education and deepen sensitivity as a means of preventing, or overcoming, hatred and discrimination; identify, emphasize and build on the common ethical heritage underlying many religions, without infringing upon their individual identities; encourage reflection on the role and influence of religion in society, and cooperation with regard to major issues of common concern, such as human rights, justice and peace; go beyond merely intellectual debate and bring the results of dialogue - new attitudes, respect and understanding - from the 'specialist' to the ordinary person.
