Set up, 28 Mar 2002, by resolution 1401 of E-XE3376 - United Nations Security Council (UNSC), within F-XF1000 - United Nations System, in the framework of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN). Initial period of 1 year; mandate reviewed annually. Latest mandate renewal, 8 Mar 2018, by Resolution 2405 (2018).
Aims
Provide political good offices in Afghanistan; work with and support the government; support the process of peace and reconciliation; monitor and promote human rights and the protection of civilians in armed conflict; promote good governance; encourage regional cooperation.
Structure
Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan. Field presence across Afghanistan, as well as liaison offices in Pakistan and Iran Islamic Rep.
