History

Founded 1987, as Mercator Education, by an initiative of European Commission (EC), in response to the Kuijpers Resolution, passed 30 Oct 1987 by European Parliament (EP). Previously known as European Network for Information, Documentation and Research into Regional or Minority Languages in Education and European Network for Regional or Minority Languages and Education (Mercator-Education) -- Réseau européen pour les langues régionales ou minoritaires et l'éducation. Also referred to by shorter title: Mercator Research Centre. One of 4 centres within Mercator European Network of Language Diversity Centres, the others being: Mercator European Network for Documentation and Information on Lesser-Used Languages (Mercator Media); Research Institute for Linguistics/Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest (Hungary); Mercator Stockholm (Sweden).
