The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).


15 June 1987, under contract to European Commission (EC), to provide the Commission with continuous ongoing technical assistance in the implementation of European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students (ERASMUS), adopted June 1987 by the Council of the European Union. Similarly assisted the Commission in implementing Action II of the LINGUA Programme since its launch in 1990. ERASMUS and LINGUA are, from 1995, replaced by SOCRATES Programme; the Bureau no longer exists, SOCRATES being administered by Socrates, Leonardo and Youth Technical Assistance Office.

Initial administration and processing of applications for EC financial support and grants under ERASMUS to: universities and other institutions of higher education for the development of inter-university cooperation programmes (ICPs): higher education staff for study and teaching visits; university associations and consortia for the promotion of other forms of cooperation in higher education within the European Community. Ongoing preparation and administration of contracts governing the award of such EC support to successful applicants. Provision of contractual support on behalf of the Commission to the special national grant awarding authorities established in EC Member States to administer ERASMUS student grants. Other duties of the Bureau include: participation in the development of the European Community Course Credit Transfer System (ECTS); regular support to National Academic Recognition Information Centres (NARIC); assistance in the provision of information regarding the ERASMUS Programme; administration of Action II (inter-university cooperation and student and staff mobility between universities) of LINGUA. Instrumental in setting up: Erasmus Student Network (ESN).
