History

within the framework of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and subordinate to Allied Commander in Chief Channel (CINCHAN) -- Commandant en chef allié de la Manche. Disbanded, 1 July 1994, when replaced by Allied Forces North Western Europe (AFNORTHWEST).

Aims

Control and protect merchant shipping and contribute to overall deterrence.

Activities

In the event of aggression, CINCHAN would be responsible for establishing and maintaining control of the Channel area, supporting operations in adjacent commands and cooperating with SACEUR in the air defence of the Channel.
