History

Aug 1995, within the ambit of the Trade, Industry, Finance and Investment Directorate of Southern African Development Community (SADC). Inaugural meeting: 24 Nov 1995. Terms of reference approved, July 1996, by Committee of Ministers of Finance.

Aims

Contribute to the process of regional economic cooperation and integration through closer cooperation among central banks of the Community in the areas of: monetary policy; monetary policy instruments; bank supervision; money and capital markets; international financial relations; payment, clearing and settlement systems; training; money laundering. Assist central bank governors and officials in gaining better insight into each others' economies and monetary policies.

Activities

Meetings of Governors discuss recent economic developments in member states. Projects: development of a statistical database; development of a data bank on SADC financial systems - policies, structures and markets; payment, clearing and settlement systems project; coordination of training of central bank officials; legal and operational frameworks of SADC central banks; cooperation in information technology; banking supervision; economic convergence and financial markets.
