History
Established by resolution 1509 (2003) of E-XE3376 - United Nations Security Council (UNSC), within F-XF1000 - United Nations System, in the framework of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN), for an initial period of 12 months. Mandate extended by resolution 1638 (2005). Resolution 2288 (216) lifted sanctions on Liberia. Transfer of security responsibilities to Liberian authorities completed 30 Jun 2016, in accordance with resolution 2239, adopted 17 Sep 2015. Gradual disengagement until complete withdrawal, 2018.
Aims
Support implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the peace process; protect United Nations staff, facilities and civilians; support humanitarian and human rights activities; assist in national security reform, including national police training and formation of a new, restructured military.
Structure
Authorized strength: up to 14,875 military personnel; 1,240 police officers.
