Founded

1922-10 Fontainebleau France

History

Oct 1922, Fontainebleau (France), by G I Gurdjieff, as an educational environment, also known as Gurdjieff Institute. The Institute had functioned under that name in Constantinople from 1920-1921, and in Tiflis (Georgia) from 1918-1920, but mainly with Russian members. Prior to that it functioned in Essentuki (Caucasus) from Oct 1917-Aug 1918, as International Idealistic Society, which is claimed to be the outcome of a group called Seekers for Truth, created in 1895 in Central Asia. National groups were created and continued to function in several countries, such as that started in London (UK) in 1921 by P D Ouspensky. Some were eventually linked through R-XR0379 - The Work, a semi-secret organization, created in Paris (France) in the post-war period by Mme de Hartmann and Mme de Salzmann. Other bodies were created independently, such as: Society for the Study of Normal Man, set up by J B Moles in 1951; School of Philosophy, founded in London; and Institute for the Comparative Study of History, Philosophy and the Sciences, created by J G Bennet in 1946, London. Such bodies, or their offshoots, continue to function in several countries. The Institute itself was officially closed in Sep 1924 but continued to function at a reduced level as Prieuré des Basses Loges until 1933.
