History

Apr 1981, Accra (Ghana), at Symposium on the State of Biology in Africa, as a regional network of U-XF4791 - International Biosciences Networks (IBN). Activities commenced Nov 1983, Dakar (Senegal). Its second phase of operations began in 1987.

Aims

Support bioscientists and strengthen existing institutions throughout the region so that they are better able to undertake their research in the basic biological sciences and in finding solutions to the problems of a biological nature confronting the region (efforts focused on the priority areas of food production and health).

Regional Executive Committee (meets annually), presided over by the Chairman, and consisting of: 2 representatives from each of the 3 sub-regions (West Africa, Central Africa and East and Southern Africa); ABN coordinator; representatives of ICSU, UNESCO, UNDP.
