History

Initial steps taken, Oct 1977, Lisbon (Portugal), by H-XD0620 - European Union of Christian Democrats (EUCD) and F-XF6414 - European People's Party (EPP). Refounded 16 Apr 1993, Brussels (Belgium), having been dormant some years. Currently a 'recognized association' within the meaning of the statutes of EUDC and EPP. No activities reported since 2008.

Aims

Promote strong self-government in municipalities, districts, regions and other territorial entities as essential for Europe's future; strive for a united and federal Europe based on freedom, justice and solidarity and on the principle of subsidiarity; defend and strengthen local and regional self-government as a requirement for a Community based on freedom; encourage citizens to participate in solving problems that concern them and strengthen the means by which they participate in the life of their communities; seek progressive reduction of social and economic differences among the regions; encourage local self-government close to the community by ensuring equal and adequate financing and power; achieve transfer of power from central to local and regional level through regionalization and general devolution; assist in developing awareness of the political and democratic unification of Europe by expanding and cultivating partnership among municipalities; contribute to a federal Europe by strengthening CEMR membership of municipalities, district authorities and regional and local associations; promote active participation of local and regional authorities in formulating European policies which concern them; encourage establishment of national associations of local politicians within EPP/EUCD member parties not yet having such.
