History

2 Nov 1955, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Statutes approved 9 Nov 1974; revised 2005. Original title: Latin American Episcopal Council -- Conseil épiscopal latinoaméricain -- Consejo Episcopal Latinoamericano -- Conselho Episcopal Latinoamericano. Subsequently changed name to: Latin American Episcopal Conference -- Conférence épiscopal latinoaméricain -- Conferencia Episcopal Latinoamericana -- Conferência Episcopal Latinoamericana.

Aims

Act as contact, reflection and cooperation body for the Episcopal Conferences of Latin America, which are represented therein by their Presidents and delegates; study problems of interest to the Church in Latin America, with a view to finding appropriate solutions; coordinate Catholic activities in the continent to ensure maximum efficiency; promote and maintain, directly or indirectly, initiatives and activities of common interest.
