History

20 Aug 1954, Hamburg (Germany FR), as a successor body to the Boyden Station of Harvard College Observatory, Arequipa (Chile), subsequently Bloemfontein (South Africa), where observatory is still located, comprising representatives of observatories in Belgium, Germany FR, Ireland, Sweden, United Kingdom and USA. Agreement came into force 1 Jul 1955. Following withdrawals of these observatories from the agreement, Council ceased to exist, 30 Jun 1976, since when the observatory has been operated by Department of Astronomy of University of the Orange Free State (South Africa); and, since 1 Jan 1981, by Institute of Astronomy set up by the University.
