History
1987. Administered by F-XF3936 - Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC), within the framework of C-XC0376 - Commonwealth Secretariat. Set up by F-XF3257 - Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Although Mozambique is not a Commonwealth country, Commonwealth countries sought to assist it in recognition of its principled stand in supporting freedom for Zimbabwe prior to 1980 and because its ports, railways and oil pipeline are vital to regional cooperation and the development of Commonwealth countries in Southern Africa. Wound up 30 Jun 1993. In response to a request from the Government of Mozambique that the Commonwealth multilateral technical assistance should continue, the Commonwealth Secretary-General has proposed a Commonwealth capacity-building facility which would mobilize Commonwealth and international resources for programmes and projects in priority areas which would be executed by the Commonwealth Secretariat.
Aims
Assist in Mozambique's reconstruction by deploying special capabilities of CFTC in areas in which other agencies might find it more difficult to work; help strengthen the integrated development of the Southern Africa region.
