Founded on the initiative of 1st 'Simposio para la Coordinación y Difusión de los Estudios Latinoamericanos'. Statutes approved at 2nd Symposium, 6-7 Jun 1980, Caracas (Venezuela), although the organization did not take form until 1982. E-XE4192 - Centro de Investigaciones sobre América y el Caribe (CIALC) and U-XG6227 - Programa Universitario de Difusión de Estudios Latinoamericanos (PUDEL), both created by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), coordinate the activities of SOLAR and D-XD4035 - Federación Internacional de Estudios sobre América Latina y el Caribe (FIEALC).
Promote, coordinate and disseminate the study of the social and cultural reality of Latin America and the Caribbean; establish institutional links between institutions and scholars on both Latin American and world levels in view of promoting Latin American studies.
