History

1988, by: SKAT, Switzerland; Practical Action (formerly ITDG), UK; GTZ-GATE, Germany. Statutes adopted and registered in accordance with French law, 31 Mar 1992. Reconstituted, 1997, allowing 2 categories of membership: Managing Partners; Network Partners. Also referred to as Building Advisory and Information Network -- Réseau d'information, documentation et conseil en bâtiment.

Aims

Provide information and advice on appropriate building technology; create links between information resources and those requiring it worldwide - government officials, financiers, builders and developers, architects, planners, producers of building materials - covering up-to-date information and advice on manufacture, performance and availability of appropriate outputs and technology from all regions and on effective management of local resources; maximize returns from local resources and skills and collect and provide customer-oriented information on appropriate technology for cost-effective building and low-cost housing; stimulate popular initiative and profitable investment in provision of low-cost housing; strengthen local capacities for promoting a vibrant building industry.

Activities

Assesses local resources, skills and opportunities; develops enabling and people-focused policy approaches; reviews standards and regulations; appraises investment for profitable local production; carries out training programmes for technology awareness and construction; disseminates information; carries out research and development programmes; manages projects. Offers professional competence in a wide range of project activities including: post-disaster reconstruction and resettlement schemes for displaced people and refugees; upgrading of urban slum areas; provision of rural housing; settlement planning; enterprise promotion programmes; educational and health facility programmes; formulation of appropriate standards and regulations.
