Founded by John-Paul II. Replaces the Commission pontificale 'Pro Russia' -- Pontificia Commissione per la Russia, set up, 1925, by Pius XI.
Assist local Catholic communities to consolidate their re-establishment after decades of persecution; attend to relations of the Catholic Church with the Orthodox Church and other Eastern Churches, and promote and coordinate activities of institutions who over the long-term have assisted Catholic communities in the region.

Commission comprises: Cardinal Secretary of State (President); a Bishop as Secretary; Secretary and Under-Secretary of the Section for Relations with States; Secretaries of: E-XF0724 - Congregation for the Clergy, E-XF1115 - Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CICSAL), E-XK0288 - Congregation for the Oriental Churches (CO).
