History

24 Mar 2005, New York NY (USA), as part of United Nations Peace-keeping Operations, by resolution 1590 (2005) of E-XE3376 - United Nations Security Council (UNSC), within F-XF1000 - United Nations System, in the framework of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN). A United Nations Advance Mission in Sudan (UNAMIS) was set up 11 Jun 2004, by resolution 1547, with the task of preparing for a full-fledged UN peace support mission to be deployed during the interim period following the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army. UNAMIS was transformed into UNMIS. Initially established for a period of 6 months, but mandate expanded. Current authorization until 30 Apr 2010. Ceased to exist Jul 2011, when South Sudan became an independent country.

Aims

Support implementation of the CPA; facilitate voluntary return of refugees and displaced persons; provide demining assistance; contribute towards international efforts to protect and promote human rights in Sudan.

Structure

Authorized strength: 10,000 military personnel, including about 750 military observers and up to 715 police.
