Circa 529, by St Benedict, as a Catholic religious order, subsequently known as Order of St Benedict (Benedictines) -- Ordo Sancti Benedicti (OSB). The present confederation dates from 1893 and groups 21 congregations. Also referred to as Bénédictins confédérés -- Benedettini Confederati.
