The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

17 Oct 1983, Rome (Lesotho), at inaugural congress, as a research offshoot of Southern African Universities Social Science Conference (SAUSSC), following recommendations of First International Workshop on Research Priorities in Southern Africa, Nov 1981, Rome (Lesotho), of Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) - currently Southern African Development Community (SADC) - and efforts of the workshop's Regional Continuation Committee serviced by Institute of Southern African Studies (ISAS).

Aims

Promote exchange of development-oriented research, information and documentation in Southern Africa; promote and coordinate research projects among research institutes and researchers in the region; channel proposals from the regions to SADCC and to international funding agencies; promote national research in the region, ensuring integration of national and regional socio-economic development process research into teaching and training programmes; facilitate scientific training and exchange of students and staff.

Activities

Regional workshops; publications on regional issues; development-oriented research projects, using interdisciplinary approach and inter-state research teams. Contributed to development of Southern African Documentation and Information System (SADIS), but which has not in fact materialized.
