Founded 1895, Vienna (Austria), by a group of Austrian social democrats. Originally referred to in English as International Friends of Nature (IFN). Reconstituted and new statutes adopted: Jun 1950, Celerina (Switzerland); 1981, Amersfoort (Netherlands); 1987, Brighton (UK); 1990, Königslutter (Germany); 1996, Sévrier (France). An independent international federation since 1975. EU Transparency Register: 88140777010-24.


Promote environmental awareness among members and their cultural activities; encourage mutual understanding, friendship and solidarity, irrespective of religion, nationality, colour, origin or gender; organize environmentally-sound leisure activities taking into account social factors; promote ecological tourism and sustainable development and foster tourism in social, alpine and associated sports; encourage study of natural history and nature conservation; promote transborder protection of the environment; support endeavours for an international language.
