History
Founded 1895, Vienna (Austria), by a group of Austrian social democrats. Originally referred to in English as International Friends of Nature (IFN). Reconstituted and new statutes adopted: Jun 1950, Celerina (Switzerland); 1981, Amersfoort (Netherlands); 1987, Brighton (UK); 1990, Königslutter (Germany); 1996, Sévrier (France). An independent international federation since 1975.
Aims
Promote environmental awareness among members and their cultural activities; encourage mutual understanding, friendship and solidarity, irrespective of religion, nationality, colour, origin or gender; organize environmentally-sound leisure activities taking into account social factors; promote ecological tourism and sustainable development and foster tourism in social, alpine and associated sports; encourage study of natural history and nature conservation; promote transborder protection of the environment; support endeavours for an international language.

Presidents' Conference (at least annually), comprising Presidents of member federations and the Executive Committee, which includes the President of C-XD5719 - International Young Nature Friends (IYNF) - which, although independent since 1975, still functions as NFI Youth Section. Audit and Arbitration Commissions. Special activity groups (6): Mountaineering; Camping; Photography; Environment; Water Sports; Winter Sports. Working Groups and Project Groups (5): Regional Development (Landscape of the Year); Tourism and Climate; Nature and Environment; Europe; Social Movement. General Secretariat.
