24 Feb 1976, Yaoundé (Cameroon), after several years of study and negotiation between governments and their insurers and following recommendations of 1st African Ministerial Conference on Economic Cooperation, Independence and Financial Problems, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire); on signature of an agreement which came into force Jan 1977. Started operations 1978. Jointly owned by F-XF0018 - African Development Bank (ADB), 41 member states of D-XD8572 - African Union (AU), and about 150 insurance and reinsurance companies. Statutes registered in 'UNTS 1/19020'.
Foster development of the insurance and reinsurance industry in Africa; promote growth of national, regional and sub-regional underwriting capacities; support African economic development.
