History

1990, in response to the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED).

Aims

Generate and communicate knowledge in the field of development and environment; promote and undertake interdisciplinary work in collaboration with the established departments of the University; further develop expertise in the field; contribute to a critical understanding of the notion of sustainable development in a national, global and local perspective; incorporate environmental and development considerations in research and training, both at the University and in a broader international context.

Activities

Coordinates research programmes. Participates in networks, including national networks on Latin America and West Africa and international research networks on environment and development issues, from both a North-South and an East-West perspective. Commissioned studies and advisory work. Undergraduate level courses in: Environment and Development; Environment and Management; Nature and Society; Energy Planning and Sustainable Development. Visiting Scholars. Disseminates research results through publications, seminars, conferences, workshops and museum exhibits.
