History
1218, Barcelona (Spain), by St Peter Nolasco. Originally a military order comprising knights, chaplains and serving brethren, this is a Catholic mendicant order of men, approved 1235. Formerly had been known as Knights of St Eulalia. Full title: Ordre de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie de la Merci pour la Rédemption des Captifs. Original functions were ransoming of captives of Barbary pirates, serving galley slaves and mission to heathens. R-XR4798 - Secular Third Order of Our Lady of Mercy, set up 1219, is an associated Catholic lay order of men and women. Referred to also in English as Order of Mercy and in French as Mercédaires. The Order follows the Rule of St Augustine.
