History
7-10 Jul 1957, Pugwash (Canada), during 1st Conference. Membership enlarged at 3rd Conference, 14-20 Sep 1958, Kitzbühel/Vienna (Austria). Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.
Aims
Bring together influential scholars and public figures concerned with reducing the danger of armed conflict and seeking cooperative solutions for global problems. Organize international conferences of scientists to discuss: problems which have arisen as a result of the progress of science, and in particular dangers to mankind from the development of weapons of mass destruction; problems of disarmament; international scientific collaboration; aid to developing countries.
