1 Sep 2001, as one of the 7 institutes constituting the E-XE5547 - Joint Research Centre (JRC) of E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC). Set up by merger of U-XK0295 - Environment Institute (Ispra EI) and part of U-XK0296 - Space Applications Institute (Ispra SAI). Ceased to exist following a restructuring of JRC, 1 Jul 2016, when most of its activities were transferred to Directorate D - Sustainable Resources.
Provide scientific and technical support to European Union policies for the protection of the environment, contributing to sustainable development in Europe.
