10 Aug 1981, Accra (Ghana), at inaugural meeting, on the recommendation of Governors of Central Banks of F-XD3462 - Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), at meeting of H-XF4799 - West African Clearing House (WACH), Nov 1976, Freetown (Sierra Leone), and decisions of subsequent meetings of West African Sub-Regional Committee of D-XD4491 - Association of African Central Banks (AACB). Structure agreed May 1980, Banjul (Gambia). Agreement adopted 26-27 Nov 1980, Freetown; revised 6-8 Jul 1987, Freetown.

Aims

Enhance cooperation among commercial and merchant banks in the West African sub-region for the purpose of fostering trade liberalization; render more functional the West African Clearing House; provide and exchange information on banking practices in the sub-region; serve as a forum for discussion of common problems; seek ways of contributing to development of commerce, industry and agriculture in the region.

General Assembly of Managing Directors of Member Banks (annual) appoints Executive Council of 25, comprising from 1 to 5 representatives per country and meeting twice a year. Liaison Officers, 1 per member country. Secretariat, directed by Secretary-General.
