2 Oct 1928, Madrid (Spain), by Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer. Received pontifical approvals in 1947 and 1950. Erected as a personal Prelature in the Catholic Church by Pope John-Paul II, 28 Nov 1982.
Spread, at every level of society, an increased awareness of the universal call to holiness and apostolate, in the exercise of one's work and in the fulfilment of the ordinary duties of a Christian.
Opus Dei is a Personal Prelature of the Catholic Church of international scope. Consists of an ecclesiastical circumscription, made up of a Prelate, the clergy incardinated in the Prelature, and lay persons - men and women, single and married, of every social condition - who freely incorporate themselves. Also includes Cooperators (some of whom are not Catholics) who are not incorporated into the Prelature. Intrinsically united to Opus Dei is the U-XF3804 - Priestly Society of the Holy Cross, for priests of the secular clergy.
