History

Dec 1963, Beirut (Lebanon), by E-XE1325 - United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and B-XB3383 - UNESCO, as a division of UNRWA/UNESCO Department of Education. First courses commenced autumn 1964.

Aims

Provide pre-service and in-service professional training for education staff so as to improve the quality of education in UNWRA/UNESCO schools, which offer basic elementary and preparatory schooling free of charge to all Palestine refugee children and youth and basic elementary, preparatory and secondary education in Lebanon, in accordance with local government school systems.

Structure

Headed by Director of Education, UNRWA Department of Education and D/DE and Chief of the Institute. Operates through a network of field tutors in 5 satellite Educational Development and Learning Resource Centres (EDCs) in Gaza, West Bank, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Headquarters in Amman (Jordan).
