Aims

Provide Buddhists of many traditions the opportunity to explore personal and group responses to political, social and ecological suffering in the world; make clear public witness to Buddhist practice and interdependence as a way of peace and protection for all beings; raise peace, environmental, feminist and social justice concerns among North American Buddhists; bring a Buddhist perspective of nonduality to contemporary social action and environmental movements; encourage the practice of nonviolence based on traditional Buddhist and Western spiritual teachings; offer venues for dialogue and exchange among the diverse North American and world sanghas.

Activities

Buddhist Alliance for Social Engagement (BASE) community-based Buddhist volunteer training programme; letter-writing campaigns for human rights; works with refugees from struggling countries; supports Buddhist prisoners; education and support to live simply, conserve energy and resist harmful products and policies; Buddhist social analysis, addressing questions of class, gender and race; participation in vigils and demonstrations; days of mindfulness practice.
