Founded

1992-07

History

Initiated during meetings of the Latin American Studies Association, Apr 1991, Washington DC (USA), by Michael Conroy, then a professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin (USA). Became a member of the Allied Social Science Association, Jan 1993, and began to host sessions at the annual meetings of the American Economics Association, the Latin American Studies Association and the Latin American Meetings of the Econometric Society. Bylaws and first Executive Committee officially approved 1 Jul 1994. Started to host annual international meetings of its own in 1996. Expanded its activities in several directions and in conjunction with academic centers in Latin America and the Caribbean from 1998, and started the Network on Inequality and Poverty, the Network on Political Economy, and a series of seminars on International Economics and Finance with the Center for International Economics at the University of Maryland (USA). Bylaws revised in 2015. Funded by F-XF5960 - Global Development Network (GDN) until 2017.

Aims

Encourage research and teaching related to the economies of Latin American and Caribbean countries; foster dialogue among researchers and practitioners whose work focuses on the economies of the region.
