13 Nov 1971, Brussels (Belgium), having been reconstituted in 1970, in conjunction with International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences, from an organization of the same title set up 1901. Previous statutes adopted 29 Nov 1980, Luxembourg; current statutes adopted 3 May 2000, Besançon (France). Registered in accordance with Swiss law.


Promote international cooperation and collaboration among interested bodies; create and maintain links among national associations and federations; support these organizations in their relations with official national bodies; represent genealogy and heraldry with international organizations.

Specific topics considered include: use of pedigrees in demography; computerization of heraldic content; support of heraldry to museological identifications; establishment of guides, repertories, card indexes. Organizes joint international congresses and colloquia with other organizations in the field, notably Permanent Bureau of the International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences. Awards several prizes.
