The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

Founded

1990

History

1990, as a result of recommendations of NGO meetings, Mar 1990, Vancouver (Canada), and, Jun 1990, Nyon (Switzerland), with the purpose of encouraging and making possible inputs from all types of non-governmental organizations into the process leading to S-XF2327 - United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), Eco '92, Jun 1992, Brazil. Ceased to exist.

Aims

Assist organizations and networks in the independent sectors to define their roles vis-à-vis UNCED upon request, facilitating information exchange with UNCED preparatory process; promote fair and effective participation in UNCED on behalf of the independent sectors; provide a forum for dialogue amongst the independent sectors; strengthen the capacity of independent sectors to work globally on issues of sustainable development.

Structure

Committee comprises 25 individuals from 'independent' sectors: Architects and Planners; Brazilian NGOs; Canadian Participatory Committee on UNCED; E-XE0409 - Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CONGO) (rotating appointment); Conservation Movement; Economic; Environmental NGOs; Grassroots Development NGOs; Human Rights; Indigenous Peoples; Industry and Commerce; Legal and Juridical; Media - developed countries; Media - developing countries; Multinational Industry; Religious and Interfaith Community; Scientific Community (2 representatives); Southern Environmental NGOs; Students; Sustainable Development NGOs. Trade Union/Labour; US Citizens Network on UNCED; Women; Youth.
