Established 9 Mar 1994, on adoption by F-XF0667 - European Parliament (EP) of 'Statute of the European Ombudsman' covering regulations and general conditions governing performance of the Ombudsman's duties. Set up under the terms of T-XT9113 - Treaty on European Union (Maastricht Treaty) and within the framework of F-XF2147 - European Union (EU). First European Ombudsman was elected by the European Parliament on 12 Jul 1995. Previously known in English as Office of the European Ombudsman.
Work to promote good administrative practice and transparency at EU level; investigate complaints about maladministration by EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies, as well as proactively looking into broader systemic issues.
