History
Established on adoption by F-XF0667 - European Parliament (EP) of 'Statute of the European Ombudsman' covering regulations and general conditions governing performance of the Ombudsman's duties. Set up under the terms of T-XT9113 - Treaty on European Union (Maastricht Treaty) and within the framework of F-XF2147 - European Union (EU). First European Ombudsman was elected by the European Parliament on 12 Jul 1995.
Aims
Work to promote good administrative practice and transparency at EU level; investigate complaints about maladministration by EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies, as well as proactively looking into broader systemic issues.
