1831, South India, by Thomas Palackal, Thomas Porukara and Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara, as a Catholic religious order for men. Diocesan (canonical) approval 8 Dec 1855; pontifical approval 12 Mar 1906. The Congregation was granted pontifical exemption in 1967. Also referred to as Carmelites of Mary Immaculate -- Carmes de Marie Immaculée -- Carmelitani della Maria Immacolata -- Congregatio Fratrum Carmelitarum Mariae Immaculatae.
