History

17 Dec 1992, when TER Cooperation Trust Fund Agreement opened for signature. Previously referred to as Trans-European North-South Railway Project.

Aims

Improve the quality and efficiency of international rail and combined transport, passenger and freight on the main international lines in accordance with AGC and AGTC agreements and implementation of TER technical standards and operational parameters on TER lines.

Activities

Total length of TER lines is 28,577 km railway lines of which 3/4 are electrified lines and over half are double track lines. Main activities are to: ensure coordinated upgrading of existing railway infrastructure up to the level of AGC and AGTC standards; contribute to the modernization of rolling stock; help participating countries in improving rail efficiency and adoption of the railway organization to market orientated management; develop a database on the railway and combined transport system in the region; coordinate improvement of operation parameters and facilitation of border crossings to the view of eliminating bottlenecks; develop cooperation in preparation of studies; promote development of combined transport; organize training activities for experts.
