History

1994, Cairo (Egypt), as Africa and Middle Eastern Committee of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AMECPPD), at the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development. Present name adopted 3 May 1997, Cape Town (South Africa). Ceased to exist 2012, when replaced by Forum of African Parliamentarians on Population and Development (APF), which was set up Dec 2012.

Aims

Identify, promote and facilitate the formulation and implementation of population and development policies and programmes designed to bring about sustainable development in Africa and in the Arab States and the initiation of parliamentary activities aimed at implementing the provisions of: the International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action (ICPD-PA); Agenda 21; the Declaration and Platform of Action of the Fourth United Nations Conference on Women and Development; the Dakar/Ngor and Amman (Jordan) Declarations and other declarations of international and regional meetings related to population and development; encourage contacts among African and Arab Members of Parliament in the population field, including sexual and reproductive health; promote and harmonize policies and legislation in these fields.

Structure

General Conference. Executive Committee, composed of President, 4 Vice-Presidents, Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, Treasurer, Deputy-Treasurer and 7 members. Sub-regions (7) represented in the Executive Committee: North Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, West Africa, Southern Africa, Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean Islands and Arab States. FAAPPD Executive Director is also Chief Administrative Officer of the Forum based in Dakar (Senegal).
