The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1975, Strasbourg (France), on entry into force of Strasbourg Agreement Concerning the International Patent Classification (IPC Agreement). Agreement amended 1979. A union administered by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Aims

Establish a classification of the fields of technology with a view to facilitating searching patent documents and making searches for anticipations.

Activities

International Patent Classification (IPC) divides technology into 8 main sections with approximately 64,000 subdivisions. Worldwide uniformity of classification would greatly facilitate retrieval of documents. The IPC is already used by patent offices in more than 70 countries and is designed to achieve such uniformity.
