25-27 Jun 1970, Sopot (Poland), at meeting of representatives of shipowning companies in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, German DR, Hungary, Poland, Romania, USSR, Yugoslavia, following initial contacts Jan 1968, and discussion of preliminary draft principles by Section 3 of the Standing Transport Commission of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, Dec 1969. Statutes and Rules of Procedure revised 1978; Terms of Reference revised 1979. Dissolved 1990.
Aims
Promote mutual cooperation among Members in respect of legal, documentary, technical, operational and general shipping policy problems of common concern; contribute to the application of principles for the safe and free international navigation; counteract any discrimination affecting equal cooperation in international maritime trade.

General Assembly (at least every 2 years), consisting of authorized representatives of Members, each delegation having the right to one vote. Council of up to 11 members (President, Vice-President, representatives of all founder member countries and of selected other members) meets at least once a year and directs activities during periods between regular General Assemblies. Officials: President, Vice-President, elected Council Members, Auditors, Secretary-General, appointed Chairmen of working bodies, Secretariat Officers. Secretariat headed by Secretary-General. Auditors' Commission.
