Established July 2005, by Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of United Nations (UN). Endorsed by UN member states at 2005 World Summit (A/RES/60/01).
Support democracy through empowering civil society worldwide with focus on strengthening the voice of civil society, promoting human rights and ensuring participation of all groups in democratic processes; complement and enhance the United Nations more traditional work with governments in order to strengthen democratic governance worldwide by supporting the demand rather than the supply side of democratization.Available with paid subscription only.
Financial and/or material support. As of Dec 2016, has provided about US$ 152,000,000 to more than 680 2-year projects, the majority conducted by local civil society groups in over 120 countries in Africa, Arab region, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Projects in 7 main areas: community development; rule of law and human rights; youth; women; media; tools for democratization; strengthen instrumentalities of government. Organizes International Day of Democracy (15 September).
