History
Circa 1550. In the second half of the 16th century the confraternity developed from other forms of aggregating the laity to the Carmelite Order. In 1633, the prior general, Theodore Straccio, gave definitive form to the confraternity. Members are associated with Carmelite Order for the purpose of honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary by wearing the brown scapular and other practices of devotion, and thus the confraternity is also known as Confrérie du Scapulaire de Notre-Dame du Mont Carmel.
