The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

Set up within the framework of European Commission (EC). Replaced European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights outside EU and originally managed through Phare Programme. Includes the former Phare and Tacis Democracy Programme. Previously also referred to as European Initiative for Human Rights and Democracy. Currently functions as a Thematic Instrument of EC DG Development and Cooperation - EuropeAid. Functions within the framework of European Union (EU).


Help establish democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights and basic freedoms.

Provides funds to projects in line with the broad range of EU policy objectives in the field and on the basis of detailed provisions of the EIDHR Regulation. Priority issues: 'Promotion and Protection of Human Rights' - Education, training and awareness raising; Racism, xenophobia, and protection of minorities; Freedom of opinion, expression and conscience and right to use own language; Rights of children; Abolition of death penalty. 'Democracy and Governance' - Promotion of the rule of law, prison system; Promotion of pluralism, free press, independent media; Prevention of corruption; Participation in the decision-making process.
