Founded

1994

History

1994, having been proposed, 21 May 1991, Vienna (Austria), at a meeting of E-XE0669 - European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and EFTA Consultative Committee (CC). Comprises members of these two bodies within the framework of F-XF0847 - European Economic Area (EEA). Provided for under the EEA Agreement signed 2 May 1992, Porto (Portugal), which came into force 1 Jan 1994. EESC and CC agreed, 2 Dec 1992, London (UK), that they would in the future constitute the EEA Consultative Committee as the single advisory body. Rules of procedure revised: 26 Jun 2002, Egilsstadir (Iceland); 15 May 2008, Longyearbyen (Norway); 26 May 2009, Brussels (Belgium).

Aims

Work to strengthen contacts between social partners in the European Union and EFTA states; cooperate so as to enhance awareness of the economic and social aspects of the EEA; provide input into deliberations of other EEA bodies.

Committee (meets annually), composed of 9 EEA representatives each from EESC and CC. Bureau, consisting of 3 members and including one Co-Chairman each from EESC and CC. Observers from interested bodies. Secretariat provided by EESC or CC according to venue of meeting.
