1983, as Center for the Study of Soviet International Behavior. Name changed 1983 to RAND/UCLA Center for Soviet Studies. Subsequently changed name to RAND Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, 1989. Present name adopted 1998.
Provide policymakers, scholars, business leaders and citizens with an in-depth understanding of developmental processes in Russia and the New Independent States in Eurasia. Conduct interdisciplinary research on the political, economic and social changes occurring in communist successor states and their implications for national, regional and international security, covering the following topics: domestic political and economic affairs; center-periphery and ethnic relations; defence and security; foreign policy relations with the West; labour, demography and migration; regional affairs; energy, environmental and natural resources management and policy.
