Why Monaco?

By Christine Barrabino, Head of the Monaco Convention Bureau

What effects has Covid had on our industry, in your view?

In 2019, before the pandemic, the share of Business Tourism in the Principality was 27%, including 40% of installed events. Thanks to the mobilization of all the destination's partners, convention centers, hotels and incoming agencies, who were able to show flexibility with regard to the conditions for postponement linked to the pandemic, we have managed to maintain this base of recurring events.

In 2022, the share of MICE in Monaco represented 21% and the trend for 2023 is very encouraging, with a constantly increasing participation rate, which gives hope that we will regain a market share equivalent to that of the previous period, pre-Covid.

Did you know, that…?
  • With more than 5,000 companies established on its soil in fields as diverse as they are varied, Monaco constitutes a vast employment pool for the entire southern region. Cosmetics, offshore oil exploitation, car parts, pharmaceuticals: a wide range of industries is represented here.

Did you know: Every day, thanks to the cross-border workers, Monaco sees its population (39,000 inhabitants) more than double!

  • On the very day of his accession to the throne, H.S.H. Prince Albert II expressed his wish to work in favor of the influence of Monaco beyond its borders, in particular by terms of sustainable development. As the world undergoes far-reaching transformations, particularly at the level of climate and health, the tourism sector, whose impact is not negligible, has started approaches and reflections in order to move towards ever more reasoned tourism. The CSR unit of the Tourism and Convention Authority worked on drafting the White Paper on Responsible Tourism, the aim of which is to draw up an inventory and set the essential objectives for a planned and controlled future.

Did you know: Monaco has set itself the target of reducing its greenhouse gases by 55% by 2030 and of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

  • In Monaco, soft mobility is at the heart of concerns and many efforts are being made to achieve the objectives set by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco in terms of sustainable development. With a territory of 2.02sqkm, all trips can be easily made on foot. It is also possible to rent one of the 350 Monabikes (electric bicycles) available everywhere in Monaco, to take public transport (hybrid bus or boat-bus running on solar energy) or to travel on board an electric taxi.

Did you know: The Principality of Monaco is the second smallest independent state in the world after the Vatican. Its territory could fit in Central Park in New York (3.41sqkm)!

Sitting on wooden benches in an authentic atmosphere, customers can discover an unexpected side of Monaco while savoring responsible and quality products.
