Non-Governmental Organisation (N.G.O.)

A private international organisation (as distinguished from an international intergovernmental organisation), set up either in the form of a single association or as a federation of various national organisations. (The International Union of Associations in Brussels publishes a Yearbook of International Organisations).

The most important N.G.O.s are given consultative status with the United Nations or its specialised agencies and with regional organisations.
